Games
I like building games not only out of my love for the 1980s classics, but also because they bring so many of the things I enjoy into one place: systems, interaction, visual design, sound, storytelling, programming, and the simple question of whether something is actually fun to play. Game development is another way I explore creating clarity from complexity — a good game takes a collection of rules, mechanics, feedback, and goals and turns them into an experience that the player can understand almost immediately.
Why I Build Games
Games are systems. They have rules, states, inputs, feedback, progression, failure conditions, and goals. Building one forces me to think about all of those pieces at once — and, more importantly, how they interact from the player's perspective. That same systems-oriented mindset shows up in my professional work, in web applications, in the tools I build for myself, and even in how I approach music. The medium changes, but I keep coming back to the same question: How do all these pieces work together to create an experience that makes sense?
Classic Arcade Mechanics
I grew up in the golden age of arcade games — Pac-Man, Galaga, Donkey Kong — and those quarter-eating classics never left me. What drew me in was the clarity that made them great: simple rules, tight mechanics, immediate feedback, recognizable goals, and escalating complexity. A game like a shooter or a platformer can communicate its entire interaction model to the player without a manual. That idea — making something immediately understandable through design rather than explanation — connects naturally to everything else I build.
Most of these projects started with a simple question: What if I took this familiar game mechanic, added an idea I was interested in, and built my own version of it? Some are experiments, some are tributes to classic arcade mechanics, and some have grown into more substantial worlds of their own. Each game features original music and soundtracks, custom pixel art, and original sound design.
How These Get Built
These are browser-based games built with JavaScript and HTML5 Canvas, developed using AI-assisted workflows in Kiro. AI-assisted development lets me spend more of my time thinking about the experience I want to create and less time fighting the mechanics of implementation. It's expanded what I can explore independently — I learn technologies by building things with them, and each game teaches me something new about interaction, feedback, and systems design.
