Drumming
has always come very naturally to me. I'm always going back and
forth about which I prefer - drums or keyboards. I think playing
keyboards is more musically satisfying, but drumming is by far the
most cathartic. I need to drum!

I
gravitated towards percussion in the 6th grade school band, probably
because the first instrument was a set of bells, which are obviously
laid out like a keyboard, with which I was already familiar.
I'm
no great percussionist, but two historical facts I will list that
I think speak for themselves:
1
) I was always First Chair in the percussion section,
except for my Freshman and Sophomore years, when the two Line
Captains held the First and Second Chair spots. During that time,
I was relegated to Third Chair, but in my Junior year, I became
the Line Captain, and First Chair by default. Click
here for more about my Drumline days.
2
) I never owned a drum set until I was in college, and
I had never sat down at a real drum set until the day I tried
out to be the drummer for the School Chorus, and I got the part
over a guy who had owned and played a drum set all his life. He
played Fire by Jimi Hendrix, and I played Hold On
by Yes. I like to think it was my steady-as-a-rock playing and
aherence to tempo that beat out his technical flash. That philosophy
still governs my playing to this day.
I've
played drums in numerous performing and recording scenarios over
the past two decades with a variety of rock bands and ensembles.
I'm always looking for new opportunities to do session drumming.
