I
was a church pianist and organist for years, most of those
years at Fair
Oaks United Methodist Church. Thanks to my parents,
I took many years of piano lessons from many teachers as
a child. Then, my final teacher taught me how to improvise
songs out of a hymnal for congregational singing, and the
musical possibilities really opened up for me after that.
As for playing the organ, I have no formal training, but
I get by when I need to.
Both
my Grandmothers were church organists and pianists for years,
so it feels like a role I inherited, and a family tradition
I carry on.
Although
I no longer play traditional services, I do still play occasional
weddings, funerals, wakes, and fill-ins. Generally, my weekly
praise band involvement
supercedes my availability for other services, but I try
to take off as often as possible to accompany the congregation
at my home church, Grace
Christian Assembly in Smyrna, TN.
Over
the years, I've played in numerous handbell
choirs, ensembles, and orchestras (frequently as the
lone percussionist) and worked in numerous capacities on
various cantatas and variety
shows since my youth.
Here
are some piano recordings I quickly made for my mom of me
playing some of the old-time gospel hymns I grew up singing
and playing for the congregation. Note: When I say "quickly",
I mean these are improvisational, one-take recordings which
contain a few mistakes, so be warned!
